UK Songwriting Contest and other stuff...
August 21st, 2007 + 7:08 AM · Petermoncrieff
I entered the UK Songwriting Contest, and I got the "Commended Entry" position.
From a recent UK Songwriting Contest Newsletter:
"Other songs that showed above average talent and ability were awarded Commended Entry status."
Woo!
It was for the song "So I Guess We're Over".
Well pleased.
I'm also working with a professional and we're working on a pro version of "The Boy on The Front Page".
Should be up in about a week

Hi guys, just thought I'd update you on what I'm up to at the moment!
I've managed to find a new band and I'm really happy, these guys are all crazy talented and dedicated and decent people overall really!
I'm now playing Rhythm Guitar and singing backing vocals instead of lead vocals... I always said I'd do that for the right band and I think in this situation it really works as we now essentially have 2 really decent vocalists so we can really do some nice harmonies!
Played my first gig with them last night at the O2 Academy 2 in Birmingham, was a really really good show.
If you wanna give us a like on Facebook or whatever then do a search for "Light The Skies"! Hope you like the song!

Just a quick song I wrote / recorded in a couple of days. Live (mostly.. spot the mistake) recording for YouTube with minimal editing (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYbv4Ozfnd8).
I have a pretty big audition in London on the 3rd of October, thinking of either using this as my audition piece or the other recent one I posted "Smile" (http://forum.bandamp.com/Audio_Review/9269.html). Will be a solo acoustic audition so would need a bit of re-working. Opinions / thoughts welcome!
I could just stay here for days
And talk for hours about the ways
You pull me in and hold me up
It's like I'm hostage for your love
But that's alright
We're getting there
And if it all aligns
And my thoughts come true
Maybe I'll think of things
That I can say to you and
---
I turn up standing by your door
Hope you hold my hand like you did before
With that stupid smile sitting on my face
Thinking how the hell can I leave this place
So I stand there staring at the floor
Thinking "oh my god" should have asked for more
Now I'll stay here playing my guitar
Writing stupid songs about how I'm in too far
---
Sometimes I’m misunderstood
I’m not as strong as I think I should be
A little something that says you care
Means the world to me I swear
And no I’m not scared
And I guess that’s a plus
But no wait that’s a lie
I’m fucking scared to death of us
---
I turn up standing by your door
Hope you hold my hand like you did before
With that stupid smile sitting on my face
Thinking how the hell can I leave this place
So I stand there staring at the floor
Thinking "oh my god" should have asked for more
Now I'll stay here playing my guitar
Writing stupid songs about how I'm in too far
---
And something’s different about the way you smile
See when you look at me I know, that you’ll be here for a while
So many memories that we’ll create and I can hardly wait
I wonder why I wonder why
---

[Uploading 2 songs from the studio today this is 2/2, first is here: http://forum.bandamp.com/Audio_Review/9268.html]
Here's the 2nd song from our time in the studio this week, it's a bit different, bit of an experiment really. Uses pretty much my full vocal range. Always try to push myself and experiment as much as possible!
Verse
Her pretty face does a pretty good job
Of hiding truth on her bed of lies
Chafed skin and a bangle to wear
And a mark that says that she doesn't care care care
Chorus
Find a way, take a breath, keep it all up and see
Fake a smile, for a while, then you'll definitely
Give a fuck, when I don't, walk away
(Why don't you smile for, why don't you smile for me)
Verse
A cover up is just a cover up
And her mascara is starting to fade
Now I'm not trying to say she's not worth attention, and I'm not trying to fight my feelings for anybody
But I need something more from her
Chorus
Find a way, take a breath, keep it all up and see
Fake a smile, for a while, then you'll definitely
Give a fuck, when I don't, walk away
(Why don't you smile for, why don't you smile for me)
Bridge
Just in time
I need a little bit from your eyes
A little place that I know you know
A little place that we both can go
But you don't see
All the things I need you to see
It's getting harder for me
Are you in it for me?
Chorus x2
Find a way, take a breath, keep it all up and see
Fake a smile, for a while, then you'll definitely
Give a fuck, when I don't, walk away
(Why don't you smile for, why don't you smile for me)
Outro
Felt so good
Time for change
(I keep it up
Live my life for the fantasy
I kept it up
Live a life of insanity)
(Why don't you smile for, why don't you smile for me)

Hold Me Down
June 27th, 2014 + 6:06 AM · Petermoncrieff
Hey guys!
Some of you may remember how I said in the last band song I uploaded that the band had split up but me and the lead guitarist would be looking for new members. Well we have a full line up again now and we've been in the studio all of this week working on 2 new songs!
The line up is now me on Lead Vocals and Guitar, Dean on Lead Guitar and Vocals, Kurt (our old rhythm guitarist) is now back but on Bass, and we have a new Drummer, Stu.
If anyone wants to hear the songs with our last line up we have:
What If - http://forum.bandamp.com/Audio_Review/9075.html
Joker In My Pack - http://forum.bandamp.com/Audio_Review/9134.html
These 2 songs I'm uploading today are the first we've recorded together, would love to hear what you think!
This first one is still pretty rocky, kind of alternative but still a bit poppy. Always challenging myself this one is right at the top of my range and really hard to sing.
Second song is here when you're ready! http://forum.bandamp.com/Audio_Review/9269.html
Verse
And I said you'd get me
You come into my life and made it real
And I know that I'm sure
So how can you not see?
And it comes down to the way you feel
That I can't be the one for you
But I don't let it get to me
Least not what you say
Chorus
Why don't you think that
I don't wanna stay
Don't hold me
Don't hold me
Why don't you think that
I don't wanna stay
Don't hold me
Don't hold me down
Verse
And I said you'd keep me
I came into your life and kept it real
And I know that I'm sure
So tell me what you see
And it comes down to the way you feel
That I can't be the one for you
But I don't let it get to me
Least not what you say
Chorus
Why don't you think that
I don't wanna stay
Don't hold me
Don't hold me
Why don't you think that
I don't wanna stay
Don't hold me
Don't hold me down
Bridge
Take your advice and give it away
Chorus
Why don't you think that
I don't wanna stay
Don't hold me
Don't hold me
Why don't you think that
I don't wanna stay
Don't hold me
Don't hold me down

Hi guys.
Haven't posted on here in a while! (must be about a year now?)
Last you heard the band was breaking up because of 2 members that weren't that great. Me and the lead guitarist were carrying on. That's still the case, we have a reliable drummer now, had a bassist for a while but it didn't work out. Still trying to find one that's suitable. We've got some studio time coming up soon to record some new stuff, our lead guitarist will play bass if we don't have a bassist by then.
We're not exactly the most active band, so I recently moved out of my parent's house and went to live in a completely different city (same one as the band), ideally so we can practice more. That's not really happening at the moment so I decided to take action and get things sorted myself. Invested in some decent ish recording equipment and this song is my first proper crack at recording with it all.
It's a cover that I'm entering for a competition (here's the original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFu1OZ_PoLY). I think I've made the song sound quite different, more my own style.
I played all the instruments in this one. They're all real apart from the drums. I did actually play the drums too, but it's on an electric kit so they probably won't sound perfect.
In case anyone's interested I'm using Logic Pro X, Alesis iO2 audio interface, a little Orange Amp for guitars (mic'd up with an sm58), bass amp designer in logic, Rode NT1-A for vocals, and a Roland electric kit.
This is first attempt I've had at properly mixing a rock song too... so any mixing tips would be MUCH appreciated.
Didn't mean for this to be such a long post... so congrats if you've read this far
Thanks for listening guys, as always.
